Scooter driver killed after crash with semi

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Police say a man riding a motor scooter was killed after colliding with a semitrailer truck.

Authorities haven't released the man's name. He died at the scene at the intersection of University Avenue and Malcolm Avenue Southeast near the University of Minnesota campus.

Police say the truck driver was making a wide right turn and swung to the left, hitting the scooter.

Minneapolis police spokesman Sgt. Jesse Garcia says investigators believe the scooter driver thought he could beat the truck through the intersection.

Expect to see a LOT more of these in the near future.

Yah-pretty sad. Saw lots more scooters and motorcycles out there while riding this past weekend. Hopefully both sides will be able to figure it out before more lives are lost!

Ugh. It's great to see lots of people taking up two-wheeled modes of transportation, but the large number of noobs makes things dangerous. Whether you're on a bike, motorcycle, or scooter, you unfortunately have to assume that drivers can't see you. Watched a motorcycle sit in the blind spot of the car in front of me for several minutes, yet the motorcyclist had the audacity to give the driver the finger when she (the driver) tried to merge.

I think everyone who wants to ride a motorcycle or scooter should be required to take a motorcycle safety course. One of the first things they teach you is to avoid being in the blind spot of a vehicle. Always go out of your way to be seen.

People don't realize how vulnerable they are.

For real. I've begun to think that driver's ed should be expanded from a car-centric elective course into a required "transportation ed" course to give more validity to all forms of transportation, clarify the "grey areas" of bike/ped laws, and have a more comprehensive understanding of safety.
